Do I Really Need a CT Scan?

“Do I really need a CT scan?” We are regularly asked this exact question many times! To put it simply, what the Dentist can read from a patient’s CT scan will impact heavily on the treatment plan.

Why the CT Scan is Important

There are two main reasons why the CT scan is important:

Diagnostic

At your consultation with our implantologist, you will be asked a series of questions relating to your medical and dental history, along with what expectations you may have regarding your proposed treatment. The implantologist will also undertake a clinical examination of your mouth and will look into your CT scan in addition to X-rays – this allows the implantologist to have a clear and visible picture of the condition of your bone, teeth or surrounding structures. The CT scan may show the presence of infected areas, cysts, and/or abnormal conditions in your mouth that need to be taken in consideration at the time of proposing a certain treatment to the patient.

Treatment Planning

The CT scan will allow the implantologist to assess the bone volume and density from a certain area where an implant is intended to be placed. The implantologist will be able to accurately measure the bone height and width of bone, the proximity of your sinuses, the proximity of your nerves and other so-called “vital structures”.

In other words, the CT scan is a vital tool for an implantologist to produce a suitable treatment plan. It will allow the implantologist to assess if the patient is a candidate for dental implants in London, if the patient has enough bone and whether a bone graft is needed.

This accuracy will translate to a more transparent treatment plan with no hidden costs. A CT scan is ultimately a diagnostic image that allows us to protect the patient’s best interests.

The CT Scan as Part of Your Consultation

A CT scan is a 3D image which provides a clear insight into the condition of the mouth, jaw-bone and teeth.

The CT scan will help the implantologist to:

  •  Produce an accurate treatment plan avoiding damage to vital structures.
  • Obtain important information about pathologic factors.
  • Gain vital information about the bone volume and density in areas where a dental implant is planned to be placed.
  • Design your treatment plan to be as efficient & effective as possible, without the risk of hidden costs.
